In P2P you buy USDT from another user, not from the exchange. The seller sets a price in naira, you transfer money to their account and the exchange keeps the USDT in escrow until the seller confirms the payment. MetaRates tracks NGN ads on several exchanges (Bybit, OKX, HTX, Bitget and others where available), so you can compare prices before buying. Cryptocurrency rules vary by country and change: check current regulation and your bank's terms. This is not financial or legal advice.
Payment methods you will see in NGN ads
- Bank transfer to a Nigerian bank account: the most common method.
- Mobile money and fintech apps such as Opay, PalmPay, Kuda and Moniepoint, which are often fast and popular with sellers.
- Every ad lists accepted methods: filter by the one you will actually use.
Step by step
- Verify your exchange account before you need the money; P2P requires identity verification.
- Open P2P, choose "Buy", USDT and NGN, then your payment method.
- Compare prices across exchanges. Rates in naira can differ noticeably between exchanges and sellers. The live USDT to NGN rate page lists the best price per exchange.
- Check the seller: number of trades, completion rate and response time. See how to choose a reliable seller.
- Create the order and pay only to the details inside it, from an account in your own name.
- Mark it as paid only after you have sent the money, then wait for the seller to release the USDT. Never pay outside the order.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Paying a different account than the one in the order. The details are shown only inside the order and can change between orders.
- Trusting "agents" in chats who offer a better rate outside the platform. This is a classic scam: see fake P2P ads.
- Using someone else's account to pay. Third-party payments can lead to cancelled orders and blocked accounts.
- Skipping evidence. Save screenshots of the order, chat and payment receipt.
Compare before you buy
Because the price comes from individual ads, comparing across exchanges can save a noticeable amount on a larger purchase. You can set a price alert in the MetaRates app to be told when the rate reaches your target.
